SongHomes for the Orisha
SongHomes are designed to be built by and for our communities of the African Diaspora in order to strengthen our Earthroot and our Spiritroot, that we Know that we prospered and thrived, long before slavery ever took us. The last 400 years is but a mere speck of our long and illustrious history on this planet, and We Will Not Be Defined by this small point in time. We will reach back to ALL THE BEAUTY that is Ours, and we will set our children's feet to walk forward in this glory we came from.
The SongHomes are simple, basic, and plain, yet gloriously beautiful structures, woven of Earth and straw and small trees of the forest with our hands, and our feet, and our hearts and our minds. We will unite the Songs of our Elders, interwoven with the voices of our children so that they will know that they Belong HERE. That the Universe glories in our existence. In backyards and schoolyards and prison yards and churchyards, WE WILL SING and Proclaim our Freedom, by virtue of learning to work together, to build together, and we will find our way out of this slavery, to Freedom at Last, In the Love of One Another, United With Earth.
The simple techniques of building a SongHome can be used to create various structures. Some possibilities include:
Options also vary as to the type of roofing desired. Clay floors can be installed. Heating benches can be built-in. The imagination has no limit.
SongHomes for the Orisha are structures, but they are also a means of bringing the human community into a deeper relationship with Earth Intelligence.
As a Praise Singer and Teacher in the Orisha tradition, we are trained to enter into a relationship with Earth Intelligence through vibration/song. Each manifestation of Earth Intelligence (Orisha) has its own song, rhythm, and dance.
What is unique about this project is that, as we are building, we will be learning the songs to each of the elements. The songs to the forest (Ochosi) as we harvest the trees, the songs to the metal in our tools (Ogun), the songs to water (Yemanja/Ochun) and to fire (Shango), and so on. There are also work songs for keeping the rhythm and pace of working. The songs are in Yoruba, principally. When finished, we will have the physical embodiment of our prayers to Earth.
The intention of this project is to assist with community cohesiveness, and especially for our African-American and Mixed Blood children, to help re-establish rootedness and a sense of place with Earth Community. This will assist them in stepping confidently into leadership roles in the environmental movement.
